Appointments CPA Section 17 Practice Operations

1. Purpose

Missed appointments and late cancellations reduce access for other patients and disrupt clinical schedules. The following terms apply in line with professional guidance and Section 17 of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA).

Effective date: 1 September 2025.

2. Required Notice

  • General Practitioner: minimum 2 hours.
  • Specialist / extended consultations: minimum 24 hours.

3. When Fees May Apply

A fee may be charged when:

  • Insufficient notice is provided.
  • The appointment slot is not rebooked despite reasonable effort.
  • The patient was informed of this policy in advance (booking, confirmation, or signage).
  • No valid reason is provided (for example, no emergency or hospitalisation).

4. Valid Exemptions

  • Hospitalisation or medical emergency (proof may be requested).
  • Death of the patient or booked beneficiary.
  • Timely cancellation within the required notice period.

5. Fees

  • GP No-Show Fee: R150.00
  • GP Late Cancellation Fee: R100.00
  • Specialist / Extended No-Show Fee: R250.00

Fees may be waived at the practitioner’s discretion.
